Discovering Chambéry

1000 years of history to discover !

In the 11th century, the House of Savoy founded an independent state fostered by European cultures.

Chambéry, its capital, is proud of its rich and multicultural past.

The Duke of Savoy's castle is located in the town centre close to your accommodation.

Hautecombe Abbey

This was a residence and chapel also belonging to the Duke of Savoy.

From the 12th century it was the home of religious communities including orders of monks. It sits on the banks of Lake Bourget, and is the traditional burial place of Savoy princes and of the Kings of Italy, since they are the same family.

The abbey contains marble statues and artwork of great intricacy presented by the guided tour, revealing at the same time the rich heritage of the House of Savoy.

Beatrice of Savoy's tomb

One of the many superb tombs in the Abbey, this represents Beatrice who had four daughters.

Her expertise in arranging marriages gave her four sons-in-law of a certain class : Henry II of England, the Emperor Richard of Cornwall, Charles d'Anjou, King of Sicily and St Louis, King of France.

Mont Blanc + Chamonix

The magnificent peak at 4807 metres is significantly higher than any other in Europe.

Its glacier begins at 4000 metres, in an area where glaciers can begin at 1200 metres in altitude.

We take the cable-car up to 3800 metres and the Aiguille du Midi viewpoint.

On this trip we also take the funicular railway up to the Sea of Ice, to look down on the superb glacier that descends all the way down from the Mont Blanc heights.
